About

UI/UX & AUGMENTED REALITY design for ARTECHOUSE’s XR App version 5.0 refresh.

The app refresh release was timed to coincide with ARTECHOUSE’s collaboration with the United Nations Foundation on the Voice Our Future project; a collection of three augmented reality experiences to celebrate the United Nation’s 75th Anniversary and the 17 new Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 17).

The Brief

1

Redesign & refresh the existing ARTECHOUSE app so that it can stand alone.

2

Leave space for the app to be reskinned and editioned to accommodate artists and organizations we work with in the future.

3

Edition the refreshed app for the United Nations Voice Our Future collaboration & experience that was launching with the app refresh.

The main goal of the app was to refresh and modernize the existing ARTECHOUSE Extended Reality app while also creating a foundation that was flexible enough that it could take on whatever kinds of branded or XR experiences we wanted for the future — without having to completely redesign the app.

We needed a solid foundation that could be reworked or re-skinned based on the current ARTECHOUSE artist, event, showcase, or experience.

Designing for AR

UX → Levels of Abstraction → Intuitive Interface

Full-Screen Passthrough

I was absolutely positive I wanted to design the app around a full-screen camera pass-through and add have any UI elements lay on top.

Ultimately, I ended up using the Shutter button as an ‘anchor’ point and built all of my other on-screen UI off of that point like scaffolding.

ERA

Extended Reality Assistant

ERA is ARTECHOUSE’S digital representative and brand ambassador.

image

Adaptable

Adaptable character and visual ARTECHOUSE brand asset.

Dynamic

Stands as an ARTECHOUSE representative or can be "reskinned" and be adapted to represent any brand, organization, or artist that ARTECHOUSE worked with in the future.

Functional

ERA can also act as a virtual assistant to help users navigate the apps, purchase merchandise or tickets for exhibitions, etc.

image

Motion

ERA runs in real-time, allowing infinite and nuanced possibilities for animation characteristics such as entropy, speed, fluidity and organic motion - whatever best represents the mood and feeling necessary to fit the brand or organization.

image

Color

ERA is comprised of a network of hundreds of thousands of moving particles that represent the countless artists, curators, technologists, and patrons in the ARTECHOUSE community that all work together in a cohesive system.

image

Form

ERA can shapeshift contextually into any form to suit whoever ARTECHOUSE is working with. ERA can become an interactive data visualization, 3D models, logos, etc.

Contextual Color

ERA’s colors for the United Nations project were based on the color codes for each of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
