About
REMNANTS uses thermal infrared imaging to reveal the physical evidence of our presence.
When we interact with the physical world, we leave behind temporary invisible traces of our presence. The time spent and the actions taken in a space are recorded by that space. Using infrared thermal imaging, REMNANTS visualizes this presence-residue; a visible record of our immediate influence on the world around us.
“Thus every principle of simplicity urges us to adopt the natural view, that there really are objects other than ourselves and our sense-data which have an existence not dependent upon our perceiving them.”
— Bertrand Russell, The Problems of Philosophy

Sense Data
This piece was inspired by the concept of “sense data” - the information we are able to receive and interpret about an object through our senses.
The True object, then, must exists outside and beyond of our perception. We can never know or interact with True objects or True Reality, we can only deduce a version of our reality as mediated by our senses.
Everything we come into contact with is a shadow of the True object; everything is mediated through our senses.
"Sense data are taken to be mind-dependent objects whose existence and properties are known directly to us in perception. These objects are unanalyzed experiences inside the mind, which appear to subsequent more advanced mental operations exactly as they are."
— Bertrand Russell, The Problems of Philosophy
